New Delhi: Heavy summer showers continued to lash the capital for another day today, setting a record of the heaviest rainfall on a single day in May in the last five years.
The rain gauges of the Weather Office measured 36.9 mm of showers during the past 24 hours ending 8:30 a.m. which was the highest rainfall for a day in the month in the past five years.
The record for the month of May in recent times was in 2002, when the capital received 129 mm of rains on a single day. The city had received a rainfall of 11.9 mm during the past 24 hours ending 5:30 p.m. yesterday.
The showers, which began at around 11 p.m. last night, continued all the night bringing down the minimum temperature to 20.3 degree Celsius from yesterday's 20.8 degrees.
Today's minimum was the second lowest in the month of May in the past five years.
As rains continued, rush hour traffic was affected in many areas due to slow vehicular movement coupled with water logging and vehicles breaking down in the middle of the roads.
The Weatherman is attributing the rains and drop in temperature to a cyclonic circulation prevailing over northern Rajasthan.
The national capital is expected to receive thunderstorm and the squall-like situation is likely to continue at least till tomorrow. The capital has been receiving rainfall from the past four days.
With the rains, the temperature has dropped to comfortable levels. Yesterday's maximum of 29 degree Celsius, which is 12 degrees below normal, was the lowest for the day in the past five years.
