CPI-M activist beaten to death in Nandigram
Friday, May 23, 2008 17:08 [IST]

Kolkata: A Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) activist died on Friday at Nandigram in East Midnapore district of West Bengal after he was allegedly beaten up by Trinamool Congress (TMC) workers on Thursday.

"Khalek, a CPI-M activist, was allegedly attacked and beaten up by TMC supporters on Thursday at Hajrakota area of Nandigram. He died Friday. We have not arrested anyone in this context so far," West Bengal Inspector-General (law and order) Raj Kanojia told IANS.

West Bengal's ruling CPI-M-led Left Front lost the zilla parishad - the top tier of the state's panchayat (village council) system - in East Midnapore district, where Nandigram is located, to TMC after an uninterrupted reign of over 30 years since 1977, when the first panchayat polls were held.
