First woman militant killed in J-K
Wednesday, May 28, 2008 21:58 [IST]

Jammu: The Jammu and Kashmir police Wednesday claimed to have gunned down the first woman militant in the state. The police said Samreena Bano and her husband Abu Yashir, a Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) divisional commander, were killed in a gun battle in Doda district.

The police in a statement said, "In a joint operation, the troops of 8 Rashtriya Rifles and J&K (Jammu and Kashmir) polic killed Shabir Ahmed Attoo alias Abu Yashir, a divisional commander of Lashkar-e-Toiba, and his wife Samreena Bano at Gundna in Khandepura Wednesday."

"The operation was launched based on specific information regarding presence of the said militant and his wife, a listed militant, inside a house." An AK 47 rifle and a pistol were sized during the operation.

The police said that Bano, a resident of Faridabad locality of Doda town, would earlier ferry arms and other items for militants and was arrested in January this year. During her interrogation she admitted to her links with the millitants.

She, however, managed to get bail from a local court and walked out free. She joined LeT as an active militant a few months back.
