CPI(M) demands resignation of Raje
Friday, May 30, 2008 18:29 [IST]

New Delhi: Accusing the BJP government in Rajasthan of having a "murderous record", the CPI(M) today demanded resignation of Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje for her "gruesome record of ordering 50 police firings" during her tenure.

"This is a Chief Minister who believes she has a divine right to rule... Like a feudal ruler. She has deployed the army... We want her resignation owning up the responsibility for firing on the Gujjar agitators that has claimed 41 lives so far," CPI(M) General Secretary Prakash Karat told reporters here.

He said the BJP government had conducted over 50 police firings in which around 80 people were killed during its four-and-a-half-year rule.

"If the BJP, which seeks imposition of Article 356 at the drop of a hat, has any moral right, should ask her to quit," he said.

BJP leader L K Advani had sought President's Rule in West Bengal when he visited Nandigram, he said, adding "we oppose any demand for President's Rule as a matter of principle".
