8 killed as gunman opens fire at Yemeni mosque
Friday, May 30, 2008 19:51 [IST]

Sanaa: At least eight people were killed and more than a dozen injured when an unidentified gunman opened fire indiscriminately outside a village mosque in the Yemeni capital Sanaa Friday, official sources said.

The incident occurred outside a mosque in Kahal village in Amran province, some 60 km north of Sanaa, just after the Friday prayers, the sources said.

Among the injured, the condition of some 10 was stated to be very critical.

According to witnesses, the gunman walked into the mosque during the weekly sermon and opened fire on worshippers.

After a brief encounter, the police arrested the gunman, the witnesses said.

As a poor Arab state facing unrest over unemployment and rising prices, Yemeni government forces have been battling with both Shia Muslim rebels and suspected Al Qaeda militants.
