NGO offers to adopt daughters of dead woman
Tuesday, June 10, 2008 18:37 [IST]

Chandigarh: An NGO based in Chandigarh has offered to adopt the two daughters of a young woman who committed suicide on Monday in the office of a top Haryana police official because her complaint of being raped by two policemen was not being registered.

Maa Sharanam, the NGO based in Kaimbala village of Chandigarh, has offered to adopt the two girls - Muskan, 5, and Heena, 3, who were with their mother, Sarita, at the time of the incident.

Sarita, 25, a resident of Rohtak, committed suicide on Monday in the office of V B Singh, additional director general of police (ADGP) in charge of law and order. She had come to file a complaint of rape against two police officials.

"We are ready to adopt the girls if their father agrees. We will take full responsibility to teach them, rear them well and even marry them at an appropriate time," Kalpana Ghai, general secretary of Maa Sharanam, told IANS.

"Such incidents of atrocities towards woman are not new in our society. This poor woman was forced to take this extreme step out of sheer frustration and after waiting in vain for two months for justice."

Hanif Qureshi, superintendent of police Rohtak, said: "The two accused cops are absconding. We have handed the case to the crime branch under the supervision of Superintendent of Police (crime branch), Rajendera Singh. A special medical board has been constituted for post mortem of the body." The policemen have been suspended.
