Chouhan cycles to secretariat again
Tuesday, June 10, 2008 19:10 [IST]

Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan Tuesday once again cycled his way to the State Secretariat - to make a political point against fuel price rise and to encourage people to save petrol and diesel.

Chouhan, accompanied by his personal assistants and security guards, pedalled non-stop from his official residence to the State Secretariat five km away.

After reaching the secretariat, he urged people to save petrol and diesel in times of spiralling fuel prices.

Chouhan said that he has constituted a committee to recommend steps to reduce the consumption of petroleum products.

"The committee constituted to suggest ways and means to reduce consumption of petroleum products would submit its report soon, and accordingly appropriate steps will be taken to stop misuse of petrol and diesel," he said.

The chief minister added that he would cycle to the State Secretariat once a week.

Chouhan said that the steep hike in fuel prices by the central government not only increased the hardships of the common people, but would also have an impact on the state government, which would be left with less money for development work.

This is the second time the chief minister pedalled to work. On June 5, Chouhan and several of his cabinet colleagues went from the chief minister's residence to the secretariat on cycles as a mark of protest against the increase in fuel prices.

The central government last week hiked the prices of petrol by Rs.5 a litre, diesel by Rs.3 a litre and cooking gas by Rs.50 per cylinder.
