Tuesday, June 10, 2008 22:59 [IST]

New Delhi: A four-member panel of retired judges is on a six-day tour of Pakistan to push for release of Indian nationals jailed in the neighbouring country.

Retired judges Nagendra Rai, Amarjeet Chaudhary, A S Gill, and M A Khan left for Islamabad yesterday to participate in the meeting of India-Pakistan Judicial Committee on Prisoners.

The judicial committee was formed following the visit of External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee to Pakistan in January last year.

The committee has the mandate to recommend steps for humane treatment and expedite release of prisoners of the respective countries in each others jails.

The first meeting of the judicial committee was held here on February 26.
