Baghdad: US and Iraqi officials say an Iraqi civilian was killed when Iraqi police fired into the air to disperse a crowd during a police recruiting drive north of Baghdad.
The US military says Iraqi police reported that several shots were fired into the air today to control a growing crowd in Samarra and "one of the shots fired hit and killed a local citizen."
An Iraqi police officer says hundreds of men had gathered to apply for police jobs, but the crowd became unruly when they were asked to return in batches on different days.
The officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn t authorised to release the information, says the man killed by the gunfire was a job seeker.
