NEW DELHI: The central government is planning to introduce the Motors Vehicles Amendment Bill in the forthcoming Monsoon session of the Parliament.
The proposed Bill, among other suggestions, calls for payment of an interim compensation amount of Rs 1,00,000 in case of death or permanent disablement and Rs 50,000 in case of permanent partial disablement.
The provision also calls for disbursement of these amounts within three months from the date of filing the application in the Motor Accident Claim Tribunal (MACT) or civil court.
"We are trying to introduce the revised Bill in the ensuing Monsoon session of the Parliament," the minister for shipping, road transport and highways T R Baalu here on Tuesday said while addressing the meeting of the consultative committee of MPs attached to the ministry.
Baalu said that department related to the Parliamentary standing committee has submitted its report to the Parliament after examining the comprehensive proposal for amendment of Motor Vehicles Act 1988.
"It has endorsed all the amendments proposed by the government with certain modifications," the minister said.
He further added that penalties for various traffic offences are proposed to be enhanced substantially to make it more deterrent.
"We have proposed that the authorised enforcement authorities may suspend on the spot, the driving licence of a drunken driver for a period of upto three months. We are also proposing to introduce civil liabilities of a driver by providing penalty of upto Rs 5,000 if one drives a motor vehicle in a rash manner, causing injury to a person," Baalu said.
