Traffic resumes on Agra-Jaipur highway
Wednesday, June 18, 2008 20:02 [IST]

Agra: Twenty-six days after the Gujjar agitation in Rajasthan brought to a grinding halt all vehicular movement on the Agra-Jaipur highway, the state roadways buses Wednesday afternoon resumed operation.

The Gujjars called off their agitation following an agreement with the state government which offers them five percent reservation as special backward community.

Bhupendra Dhillon, Railways public relations officer, said trains to Rajasthan would start Thursday after routine checking and some repair work on the rail track. Trains on the Mathura-Alwar and Bandikui routes are already running.

While the roadways have suffered losses estimated at around Rs.1.56 crore (Rs.15.6 million), the railways have lost over Rs.50 crore (Rs.500 million) from refunds on cancellations and damages to the tracks.

The Gujjars are classified among the other backward classes (OBCs) in Rajasthan but they want Scheduled Tribe status that would give them a bigger share of the jobs and education quota pie. They have been agitating since May 23.
