IIT Kanpur studies cracks on earth surface
Wednesday, June 18, 2008 22:22 [IST]

Kanpur: A team of three experts from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur(IIT-K) Wednesday visited Uttar Pradesh's Ghatampur and studied deep cracks that have appeared on the surface of the earth.

The team, constituted at the behest of Kanpur District Magistrate Anil Kumar Sagar, studied the possible causes of the cracks. It is expected to submit a detailed report to district authorities Thursday morning.

The team members, Purnendu Bose, Amit Prashant and Pranab Kumar Mohapatra, said there could be several factors behind the phenomenon.

They said cracks could also develop in the absence of rain for a long time. Sudden rains often lead to temperature imbalances below the earth's crust, resulting in cracks, they added.

The members advised the local people to immediately inform local authorities if they found rainwater entering into the ground through a particular point.
