Midnapore (WB): Vast streches of West Midnapore district still remained cut off following heavy floods, thus affecting relief operations even as authorities put up a brave front in controlling the situation.
"The Army and the civil administration are working hand in hand and trying to reach out to every nook and corner of the flood affected parts," District Magistrate N S Nigam told PTI.
"Still there are many parts of the district which are untouched but we hope that today or tomorrow army and civil personnel will surely reach the remotest parts of the district. We have requisitioned one helicopter from Kalaikunda air base for air-dropping supplies to those parts where boats cannot reach," Nigam said.
However, travelling nearly 150 kilometers in the flood hit parts of the district showed Sabang, Pingla, Narayangar and most of Datan were under swathes of water with people perched on roof tops, clinging on the branches of the trees and sticking to the dome of the temple or the mosque waiting in vain for the relief.
In pathetic conditions, people in Khalinan and Poktapole in Naraynagar, Sastlgar and Naikabaita in Datan and Jhunupalasic in Sabang are left out with potable water and food and are living alongside snakes and poisonous insects.
