Saturday, June 21, 2008 22:13 [IST]

Noida: A poacher was held and tiger skins and teeth were recovered from him when he was attempting to sell the banned articles, the Noida police in Uttar Pradesh, on the border of the national capital, said Saturday.

"following a tip-off, our team nabbed two smugglers late Friday night. During the raid, one of them taking advantage of darkness succeeded in fleeing while the other was arrested," said superintendent of police (city) Ashok Tripathi.

The arrested man was identified as Satvir Chand Tyagi, a resident of Kaila in Meerut district. The police alleged Tyagi had bought two tiger skins from Bharat Bhandari, a resident of Chamoli in Uttarakhand.

Tyagi said he bought the skin for Rs.60,000 each along with the teeth, added the police officer. The market rate of the tiger skin is over Rs.100,000.

A case under the Wildlife Protection Act and relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been filed against him.
