Traffic to Sikkim resumes
Sunday, June 22, 2008 20:56 [IST]

Gangtok: Traffic on National Highway 31A, that leads to Sikkim from Darjeeling hills, resumed today following relaxation of bandh called by Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM).

GM relaxed the onging bandh for 60 hours at 6 pm today. The movement of vehicular traffic on NH 31A, the lone highway connecting Sikkim with the rest of the country, resumed at 6 pm, a police officer at the inter-state border checkpost at Rangpo told PTI.

Smaller vehicles carrying passengers between Sikkim and Siliguri or Darjeeling were plying after the news of relaxation spread, he said.

The traffic has been expected to pick up early Monday morning as hundreds of goods-laden vehicles would leave the market in Siliguri for Sikkim with stocks of essential commodities, including vegetables, official sources said.
