Weekend violence leaves 17 dead in Mexican city
Tuesday, June 24, 2008 02:53 [IST]

Ciudad Juarez (Mexico):  Seventeen people were killed in a wave of weekend violence in northern Mexico s Ciudad Juarez, a border city torn by a drug war pitting rival cocaine cartels, police said today.

Among the incidents reported by police was a brazen attack that left three men dead when assailants armed with assault rifles fired on a children s party.

The government has deployed more than 30,000 soldiers to combat drug trafficking around the country, but the violence has persisted with more than 4,000 people, including 400 police officers, killed in the last year and a half.
