Nepal PM to announce resignation tomorrow
Wednesday, June 25, 2008 22:42 [IST]

Kathmandu:  Nepalese Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala will announce his resignation tomorrow and the ruling alliance will move a motion in the Parliament to amend the Interim Constitution paving way for formation of the new government. The alliance passed a 21-point agreement in this regard here today.

The agreement signed by the top leaders of the Seven Party Alliance has to be endorsed by the cabinet before it could be tabled in the Parliament for implementation. As per the agreement, there will be a constitutional provision to appoint the president and vice-president through a simple majority and an impeachment motion to remove them by a two-third majority.

Similarly, the parties also agreed to table a motion seeking an amendment to the provision of a two-third majority to form and oust the government with a simple majority. Koirala was supposed to announce the resignation today along with tabling the constitution amendment motion, but it was postponed till tomorrow as the SPA meeting concluded only in the late evening causing delay in endorsing the constitution amendment motion.

However, Koirala will formally submit his resignation only after electing the new president following the amendment to the constitution.
