India appreciates Lanka devolution package
Thursday, June 26, 2008 22:57 [IST]

New Delhi:  Appreciating the devolution package being implemented in Sri Lanka, India has pressed it to do more, particularly to satisfy ethnic Tamils.

The message was conveyed when National Security Adviser M K Narayanan, Foreign Secretary Shivshankar Menon and Defence Secretary Vijay Singh went to Colombo last week.

The three-member committee has been formed to interact regularly with their Lankan counterparts to see implementation of the devolution package.

"The delegation wanted to see the progress made on implementation of the devolution package," sources said here today.

Seeing the start of implementation of devolution package as the good first step, New Delhi feels that more needs to be done in this regard to ensure that peace is ushered in in the island nation.

New Delhi maintains that the lot of ethnic Tamils in Sri Lanka has to be improved as the situation in the island nation has an impact on India too, particularly in the form of refugee problem.
