Islamabad: India and Pakistan will exchange new lists of prisoners held in each other's jails on July one as part of efforts aimed at ensuring the humane treatment and speedy release of prisoners.
The two countries first exchanged lists of prisoners on March 31 in accordance with the recommendations of a judicial committee set up by them to look into the problems of Indian and Pakistani nationals in jail.
The committee has also been tasked with giving recommendations to facilitate the speedy release of prisoners.
Pakistan has provided what it describes as a "complete list" of Indian civil prisoners and fishermen held in its jails. This list includes 53 civilian prisoners and 436 fishermen.
Indian officials, however, say there are 202 civilian prisoners in Pakistani jails and authorities had not provided consular access to 165 of them.
An initial list provided by India included 133 Pakistani civilian prisoners and 14 fishermen. An additional list of 91 Pakistani prisoners was handed over by India on June 9, Foreign Office spokesman Mohammad Sadiq told reporters today.
"We believe that the (Indian) list is still incomplete and are waiting for additional names from India," Sadiq said.
The recommendations of the eight-member Pakistan-India Judicial Committee on Prisoners to "streamline the release of prisoners are being implemented", he said.
The committee visited Pakistani prisons last week and it will visit Indian jails during July 20-27.
