Ban studying request for probe into Bhutto death
Friday, June 27, 2008 02:26 [IST]

United Nations: United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon today said he was still considering Pakistan's request for a UN probe into the assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.

"We are still examining and reviewing their request to establish some commission under my authority," Ban told reporters. "But I have not yet (reached) any conclusion."

Pakistan had on June 6 formally requested the UN to probe the assassination of Bhutto.

The ruling Pakistan People's Party (PPP) had pledged before the February general election that if it came to power, it would ask the UN to investigate the assassination of its late chairperson.

The two-time premier was killed in a gun-and-bomb attack after she addressed an election rally in Rawalpindi on December 27.

A UN official had said last week that the UN Security Council will take a decision on Pakistan's request but could not give timeframe for sending it to the body.
