Monday, June 30, 2008 20:30 [IST]

Lucknow: Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) legislator Shribhagwan Sharma alias Guddu Pandit, arrested on charges of rape, intimidation and adultery, was referred to the Aligarh Medical College in Uttar Pradesh after he complained of a heart problem, police said Monday.

"His family members approached us and informed us that Pandit is having a prolonged heart problem. We immediately took him to the district government hospital but as a cardiologist was not available, he was referred to Aligarh," Kanshi Ram Nagar Superintendent of Police Luv Kumar told IANS by phone.

The police Sunday arrested Pandit after a woman alleged that he had raped, physically and sexually abused her for years. The lawmaker was arrested from sector-53 residence in Noida, a suburb of the the national capital.

A court remanded Pandit in 11 days of judicial custody, Kumar added.

The investigating Officer of the case, inspector R.S. Rathore, questioned Pandit about the charges levelled by the woman.

"However, Pandit maintained that he has been wrongly framed and does not know the complainant," said Rathore.

The father of the victim, Dinesh Chand Birla, in his complaint registered at Kasganj police station in Kashi Ram Nagar district, has said the legislator had 'married' his daughter concealing the fact that he already had a wife and two kids.

Later when it became known that he had a family, the legislator insisted on keeping the victim as a mistress. The complaint says the woman was abducted, kept at several places, raped and physically and mentally tortured by Pandit.
