Four arrested for killing peacock in UP

Lucknow: Four people were arrested for killing a peacock, the country's national bird, in Uttar Pradesh's Mirzapur district, an official said Monday.

"For eating the peacock meat, the locals first trapped it and later burnt the national bird alive in Mirazpur's Barbasa Geherwar village," sub-divisonal forest officer Akhilesh Pandey told IANS.

He added that four villagers have been booked under the Wildlife Protection Act in connection with the incident.

Peacock is a protected under Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act. Killing of the national bird is punishable with jail terms of three to seven years.
