Iran rejects comparison with North Korea
Tuesday, July 01, 2008 14:19 [IST]

Tehran: Iran Tuesday rejected US comparison of its nuclear programme with North Korean activities, calling the comments part of a disinformation campaign.

“The essence of Iran's peaceful nuclear activities are completely different from those of other countries,” the official IRNA news agency quoted foreign ministry spokesman Mohammed Ali Hosseini as saying.

Hosseini was responding to reporters' questions over Tehran's reaction to the US comment.

North Korea has recently agreed to dismantle its nuclear weapons programme in return for economic aid packages and lifting of sanctions by the West.

Terming the comparison “wrong”, he said such comments were part of the disinformation campaign of the Western media against Iran.

"All Iran's peaceful nuclear activities are under direct supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency and are fully based on Non-Proliferation Treaty rules and regulations," he said.

Western powers suspect Iran is secretly developing nuclear weapons in the guise of a nuclear power programme and is under three sets of UN sanctions for refusing to stop its uranium enrichment activities.

Tehran has been insisting its nuclear programme is civilian and enrichment activities are its “sovereign right”.
