US extends Afghanistan stay for 2,200 marines
Friday, July 04, 2008 01:32 [IST]

Washington: The United States has extended the stay of 2,200 marines in Afghanistan for one month until November, a US Marines spokeswoman said today.

The extension had been requested by the International Security Assistance Force, and was approved by Secretary of Defence Robert Gates "within the week," Captain Amy Malugani said.

Members of the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, who are deployed in Helmand province are now expected to return in November instead of October as originally scheduled.
