38 killed in Myanmar boat accident

Yangon: Thirty eight people have been confirmed dead after a boat capsized in the Yway River in southwestern Myanmar, official newspaper New Light of Myanmar reported on Friday.

About 82 people were on board the the passenger motor boat, Myo Pa Pa Tun, when the incident occurred in southwestern Irrawaddy division on Tuesday, the newspaper said.

The boat, which started sailing from Pakeikkyi village, was heading for Myaungmya in the Irrawaddy division, the region worst hit by devastating Cylone Nargis in May. According to the latest official figures, the cyclone has killed 84,537 people, leaving 53,836 missing and 19,359 injured.
