Death toll in land transfer protests rises to six

Srinagar: A youth, who was injured during protests against the transfer of forest land to Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board, has succumbed to injuries after battling for life for 13 days, taking the death toll in the agitation to six.

Feroze Ahmad Khan, who was hit in the eye by a teargas shell on June 23 during a protest at Maisuma locality, died at a hospital here last night, official sources said.

Khan, a resident of Nawakadal locality in downtown city, was laid to rest at the Eidgah graveyard, sources said. With this, the death toll in the protests against the government order transferring 39.88 hectares of forest land to the SASB has gone upto six.

Five other persons were killed and hundreds injured in the protests at various places in the Kashmir valley over the controversial order, which was revoked by the government on Tuesday following withdrawal of claim over the land by the SASB chairman and Governor N N Vohra.

Meanwhile, a former militant, who was shot at by ultras in Sopore town of Baramulla district yesterday, also succumbed to injuries at a hospital here, the sources said. Ghulam Mohiuddin Rather, a released militant, was shot at in Hardshiva village of Sopore town, they said.
