21 killed in China coal mine accident
Sunday, July 06, 2008 19:13 [IST]

Taiyuan (China): At least 21 miners have been killed after inhaling poisonous gas at a coal mine in China's northern province of Shanxi, officials said Sunday.

The accident took place around 11.20 a.m. Saturday in Wujiu coalmine near Datong City of the province.

Officials said a blast at the coalmine had triggered the emission of carbon monoxide gas. The workers died after inhaling the gas. Eleven miners managed to escape.

The exact number of miners working underground at the time of the incident is still unknown.

The coal-rich Datong city is also called as China's coal capital.
