Sunday, July 06, 2008 21:38 [IST]

New Delhi: Members of the Parsi community in Delhi Sunday organised a memorial service for former Indian army chief Field Marshal S.H.F.J. Manekshaw here.

Manekshaw, who crafted India's historic victory in the 1971 war against Pakistan, died in the Military Hospital in Wellington, Tamil Nadu, June 27. He was 94.

Many Parsis, including Indian Air Force chief Fali Homi Major and Director General of Coast Guard Vice Admiral Rusi Contractor, and Marshal of the Air Force Arjan Singh were present at the service held at Delhi Parsi Anjuman near Delhi Gate.

The community remembered Manekshaw as an icon to follow and a personality young people should emulate.

Singh, the only living Marshal of teh Air Force in the country, said: “He (Manekshaw) emphasized on inter-services cooperation and need for the men from the three defence forces to work in tandem”.

Maya Daruwala, Manekshaw's younger daughter, said, “He was a wonderful father who took care of all our needs and supported us in all walks of life.”

Air Force chief Major said: “Sharp and witty till the end and imbued with an indomitable fighting spirit, he will continue to live on in the minds of committed citizens and will inspire them to take the nation forward."
