UNPA allies to vote against govt
Friday, July 11, 2008 22:55 [IST]

New Delhi: UNPA constituents TDP, AGP and Jharkhand Viakas Morcha with eight MPs in Lok Sabha today said they would vote against the government in the trial of strength in Lok Sabha on July 22 while some other regional parties cutting across the political divide held the cards close to their chests.

"The TDP with five MPs, AGP having two and Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (JVM) one member will vote against the motion of confidence in the Lok Sabha on July 22," TDP parliamentary party leader K Yerrannaidu told PTI.

RLD chief Ajit Singh, whose party has three MPs, said the Indo-US nuclear deal would not be harmful for India and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee said her party did not favour toppling of the UPA government. However, both parties said they would decide later their stand on the confidence vote.

"We are not in favour of toppling the government", said Mamata in Kolkata but said a final decision would be taken by her party later.

NDA constituent Shiromani Akali Dal with eight MPs in Lok Sabha said it has decided in principle to vote against the government in the floor test in Parliament.

"In principle, it has been decided by the party it will vote against the UPA government but a final decision would be taken on July 15", senior SAD leader Kanwaljit Singh told reporters.

By contrast, UPA constituent Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, which has five MPs, kept up the suspense over its stand on the confidence motion by saying that attending a meeting of the UPA does not mean its support can be taken for granted.
