Govt wins trust vote by 19 votes in LS

New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh won the confidence motion in India's lower house of Parliament by 19 votes on Tuesday evening, with 275 votes in favour and 256 votes against.

In the crucial confidence vote in Parliament with results after electronic voting showing 275 votes in favour of the motion, as 256 votes against it with ten abstentions in a house with 487 members present.

Apparently, many members had either not voted properly or had waited to do manual voting that the speaker said would follow.

The electronic voting was followed by manual voting with members recording ayes and noes on slips of paper. Speaker Somnath Chatterjee said the final results were yet to be declared, but MPs began crowding around a smiling prime minister and Congress chief Sonia Gandhi to congratulate them.
