Guwahati: A human organ trade racket has been busted with four persons from Assam filing an FIR that their kidneys were removed in Chennai and the police arresting one person in this connection.
Four persons -- Sanjit Ghosh, Abdul Sheikh, Gopal Das and Madan Das -- had filed FIR with the police that their kidneys had been removed at a Chennai hospital which was allegedly arranged by a middleman, Ajit Malakar who has since been arrested, Additional Superintendent of Police Jayshree Khersa said here today.
The transplantation was done willingly and the donors had received money in return but they decided to file a complaint after their health condition began to deteriorate , police said the middleman had claimed.
The police has registered a case- 396/08 under Sections 120b/342/307 IPC under the Transplantation of Human Organs Act, 1994 with the Basistha police station in the city.
Under the terms of the Act any person who renders his service at any hospital for purpose of transplantation, conducts, associates with or help in any manner in removal of any human organ without authority is punishable with a prison term of five years and a fine which may extend upto Rs 10,000/-.
Malakar had arranged for the transplantation and the involvement of doctors here and in Chennai cannot be ruled, police said. They has also launched an investigation into the alleged role of two city-based private hospitals.
The transplantation was done in Chennai but the preliminary diagnosis was done in the two city-based hospitals, the official added. Source : PTI
