Life came to halt in eastern Nepal
Tuesday, August 12, 2008 13:57 [IST]

Kathmandu: Life remained crippled in the eastern Nepal districts for the third consecutive day today as a result of the indefinite strike called by different transporters, protesting murder of a bus driver here.

Thousands of passengers including tourists, have been stranded today as long route vehicles did not ply in three zones Mechi, Koshi and Sagarmatha in eastern Nepal.

The agitators vandalised at least half a dozen vehicles at different places here for defying the shut down call.

According to the police, transporters had called a strike from Sunday to protest the murder of a bus driver, Krishna Kumar Khawas, who was shot dead by robbers in Sarlahi district last week.

The strike has been extended to Janakpur Zone in the central Nepal from today, police added.

The transport workers have put forward various demands including compensation worth one million rupees to the kin of the victim and ensuring security for transport operators.
