Shillong: BSF troops along the Indo-Bangla border have been put on high alert ahead of the Independence Day celebrations to thwart any subversive attempts by insurgents from across the border.
BSF sources said additional troops have been deployed along the entire stretch of the border and vigil and patrolling intensified to prevent movement of anti-national elements.
"Although there are no specific threats, but intelligence inputs suggest that militants camping in Bangladesh might try to sneak into India for subversive activities in view of the Independence Day," they said.
As many as four rebel groups of the region have called for their customary boycott of the celebrations, prompting the security forces to be on high alert.
"Instructions have been given to the commanders to ensure that there is zero infiltration," they said.
Meanwhile, vigil was intensified by the police following reports of presence of jehadi sleeper cells in the capital.
Police said some suspicious, non-Indian looking men and women have been spotted in various localities of the city.
"Search operations have been launched in specified areas, but there has been no arrests so far," the police said. Source : PTI
