Left asks DMK to join third front
Saturday, August 16, 2008 01:16 [IST]

DINDIGUL (Tamil Nadu): Days after announcing withdrawal of support to the ruling DMK, the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) Friday exhorted Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi to join the proposed third front.

"Political equations have undergone a sea change after 2004 and therefore Chief Minister Karunanidhi should weigh his political options more carefully," state CPI-M secretary N. Varadarajan told reporters in the city, 400 kms south of Chennai.

Varadarajan reiterated his partys national concerns that led to the withdrawal of support to the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government in July and said the same reasons necessitated the formation of a third front not only at the centre but also in Tamil Nadu.

The announcement came a day after the main opposition led by AIADMK boss J. Jayalalitha indicated interest in the reorganisation of the third front nationally under the leadership of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati.

Jayalalitha also exhorted the Left and the PMK - both bitter critics of the DMK at different points in time - to join the states opposition ranks.

Karunanidhi had appealed to the Left to jettison narrow political dogma and to remember its united struggle with the DMK in the 50s to win concessions for the working class and farmers.

While the PMK had been dropped from the DMK-led Democratic Progressive Alliance a few months ago, the Left had announced withdrawal of support on Saturday.
