Prominent Indians in America back Obama

NEW YORK: The fundraising benefit for Democratic president candidate Barack Obama held recently at New York's was attended by prominent  Indian American stars, business moguls and south Asians.

Filmmaker Mira Nair, actor Kal Penn, Indian food writer and actress Madhur Jaffrey, movie star Sarita Choudhury and actor-writer Aasif Mandvi had all sent in their RSVPs. The event had the hallmarks of a swinging party with DJ Rekha amp; Falu Trendroid, Bollygirl+Dimm, DJ BunnyLove, and DJ Nihal spinning standard remixes and India-inspired party anthems.

Obama issued messages congratulating India, its people, and the Indian-American community on India's 61st anniversary of Independence.

With India," Obama said, "America has one of its most important relationships in an uncertain world."

He also hailed Indian Americans as "strong contributors to the local communities." 

"They balance love of the homeland with a strong commitment to America, and their knowledge, skills, values and entrepreneurial spirit have immeasurably benefited both countries," he added.

The sold-out event drew 400 people with some supporters buying $2,500 tickets. Corporate sponsors contributed $5,000 and last-minute tickets were sold at the door for $250 and $125.
