Monday, August 18, 2008 11:13 [IST]

Munger: Five pilgrims were killed and nine others injured when the jeep carrying them collided head on with a bus in Bihar's Munger district, police said today.

The accident occurred near Bochahi village around last midnight when a jeep on way to Nauagarhi in Munger district from Deoghar in adjoining Jharkhand collided with a bus that was going from Munger to Deoghar.

While five persons died on the spot, nine others were injured, six seriously, in the accident. All those killed and injured were travelling by the jeep, which was completely smashed, the sources said.

The pilgrims were returning from Deoghar after performing jalabhishek of Lord Shiva at the famous Baidyanath Dham temple on the last day of Shravan yesterday.

While three of the injured are undergoing treatment at a government hospital here, the six seriously wounded have been referred to Patna Medical College Hospital, the sources said. The deceased have been identified as Umesh Mandal, Pravin Singh, Manoj Mandal, Ashok Mandal and Dhanush Tanti.
