Tension in Ahmedabad after communal clash
Monday, August 18, 2008 15:47 [IST]

Ahmedabad: Tension prevailed in parts of Ahmedabad Monday after groups of two communities hurled stones at each other after overnight clashes even as police said they were keeping a close watch on the situation.

The two sides continued heavy stone pelting for more than an hour in the morning in Dariapur, Shahpur and Delhi Darwaza areas in the walled city.

The fresh violence followed clashes late Sunday night, when people from the two communities came out in the streets over a minor road accident in Delhi Darwaza area and police had to lob 72 teargas shells and fire one round in the air to disperse the mobs.

On Monday morning, trouble broke out in Shahpur with crowds throwing stones, glass bottles, bricks and concrete slabs at each other. Panic prevailed in the area and shops quickly downed shutters as people ran helter-skelter

Police said one person was arrested from Dariapur while one policeman was injured. Gujarat Director General of Police (DGP) P. C. Pande told IANS the situation was being monitored and trouble makers would be dealt with heavily.
