'Sheikh and Mansoori planted Jaipur bombs'
Tuesday, August 19, 2008 13:09 [IST]
JAIPUR: Police investigations reveal that the two key suspects who had planted explosives that killed 68 persons in Jaipur on May 13 are Sajid Mansoori and Imran Sheikh.

A senior police official of the Gujarat crime branch, which arrested Mansoori and Sheikh along with eight others on Saturday, told DNA that the Simi activists executed terror strikes in Ahmedabad and Jaipur.

The official added that Mansoori and Sheikh were top Simi functionaries. "They were No 3 in the hierarchy, after Mufti Abdul Bashar Kasmi (Abu Bashir) and Abdul Subhan alias Taufique Bilal," the official said.

According to the police, Bashir was in charge of identifying targets and recruiting people to carry out the operations whereas Taufique, who worked as an executive of a direct sales agency of an IT company, was responsible for assembling bombs and hacking mails to spread terror through emails.

Both Mansoori and Sheikh were the modules men on ground responsible for placing bombs at pre-assigned targets, the police said.

The recent detentions made by the Rajasthan police are also based on the tip-off stating that Mansoori and Sheikh were in Jaipur on the day of the blasts.

The Ahmedabad police had told investigators in Rajasthan that Mansoori and Sheikh had stayed in a guest house on the Moti Doongri Road near Sanganeri Gate.

On the basis of this information, Rajasthans crime branch had picked up at least a dozen persons from Kota, Baran and Jaipur late Saturday night.

Investigations also reveal that the duo had visited the boys hostel of SMS Medical College to meet an acquaintance, Abrar Ali, on May 12.

"We questioned Abrar to track Mansooris movement in Jaipur on the day of the blast. There is no evidence to prove he was linked to the blasts," police sources said.
The police have also rubbished allegations claiming that the ammonium nitrate used in the blasts was from the SMS Hospital labs.

Three years ago, Mansoori adopted the name Salim and rented a house belonging to a registered doctor Ishaque Mohammed in the Wakf Nagar area, at Kota for several months to form a network of like-minded youth. Mansoori stayed there as a book-vendor. The police are interrogating Mohammed for more information on Mansoori.
Mohammeds son Taufir, who is pursuing a degree in Unani medicine from Jaipur, was also detained for interrogation because of the familys acquaintance with Mansoori.
