Agartala:The principal of a Tripura government college and his son, a doctor, were arrested Tuesday after the doctor’s girlfriend committed suicide, a police official here said.

“We have arrested the principal Nepal Chandra Das and his doctor son Soumya Das for allegedly provoking the latter's fiancé to commit suicide,” said Seema Biswas, an official of the Agartala women police station.

Twenty-year-old college student Misti Das, daughter of a professor here, committed suicide last week. The victim's family lodged a complaint with the police alleging that Misti was forced to commit suicide.

“We want severe punishment for Soumya and his father as my daughter was provoked to commit suicide by them,” said Misti's father Gopalmani Das.

Soumya is a doctor at the medical college here while his father Nepal Chandra Das is the principal of Bir Bikram Memorial college in Agartala.

Father of two girls, Gopalmani said : “Soumya and Misti had a love affair. Recently Soumya refused to marry Misti.”
