BJP says Nehru was wrong
Wednesday, August 20, 2008 12:23 [IST]
NEW DELHI: The BJP squarely blamed the Congress-led UPA government on Tuesday for the mess in Jammu and Kashmir. It claimed the trouble in the region was a byproduct of UPA policies.

Party leaders see the current developments as worrying and proof that Shyama Prasad Mukherjees vision for Jamp;K - one law, one constitution and on a par with rest of India - was correct and the Nehruvian policy granting special status and a separate constitution was flawed.

"This is an ideological battle which we cannot lose because the present situation is a natural corollary of Nehruvian thinking," BJP general secretary Arun Jaitley said.

Taking the point further, a BJP leader said although the Nehruvian theory had "collapsed", there was a likelihood that there would be voices such as "So what? Give up Kashmir". He mentioned some recent articles by Arundhati Roy and Vir Sanghvi suggesting this.

Accusing the UPA government, "which has failed to see beyond its vote-bank politics", BJP president Rajnath Singh said it acted in a way that created a situation which led to a big communal divide in Jamp;K and now the agitation over the issue has reached a point where it could easily spread to other parts of the country.
