New Delhi: A city court has allowed the police to cancel a case related to molestation of Delhi University students in 2007 by police job aspirants after the complainant, a student from Hansraj College, deposed that she had levelled the allegations at the behest of some lecturers.
"As nothing had taken place in my presence, I am not in a position to identify either the girls or the persons who might have done some wrong. I have no objection if the case is cancelled," the BA English (Hons) student, who gave the complaint in a fake name, told the court.
The case was linked to an incident in September last year in which a group of examinees for the post of lower division clerk and police constable had allegedly molested DU students near the Vishwavidyalaya Metro station, triggering a public outcry on students safety on the campus.
The complainant claimed that she had lodged the complaint with police at the instance of some lecturers who were protesting in front of the Vice-Chancellor s office.
"As per the final report under Section 173 of the CrPC, the principals of various colleges in North Campus were contacted to find out the correctness of the complaint, even girl students were contacted but no one has mentioned anything about the identity of the miscreants," Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Kanwaljeet Arora noted.
The case stands cancelled as nothing was made out in it, the court said.
The incident had sparked demonstrations by students, leading to suspension of the then SHO Mukherjee Nagar police station and two Delhi Police constables on the charges of showing insensitivity while dealing with the complaints.
The National Commission for Women had taken a serious view of the incident and had called a meeting of the Delhi Police Commissioner and DU Vice-Chancellor. Source : PTI
