Pakistan to hold presidential election Sept 6
Friday, August 22, 2008 13:50 [IST]

Islamabad:Pakistan will hold presidential election Sept 6, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) announced here Friday.

The nomination papers will be received from Aug 26, said ECP Secretary Kanwar Dilshad.

The polling, if necessary, will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at provincial and national assemblies simultaneously, Dawn TV channel quoted Dilshad as saying.

The Electoral College for the election includes the members of the four provincial assemblies, the National Assembly and the senate.

Pervez Musharraf quit the president's post Monday to avoid impeachment. According to Pakistan's constitution, presidential election has to be held within 30 days of the president's resignation.

Ruling parties of the country have not yet reached a consensus on presidential candidacy.

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari is poised to be the presidential candidate of the ruling coalition, reports said.
