Uma Bharti injured in dais collapse
Saturday, August 23, 2008 09:12 [IST]

Bhopal:Bharatiya Janshakti Party president Uma Bharti received injuries to her head when a dais she was standing on for a public meeting in Madhya Pradesh's Raisen district collapsed. She is reported to be out of danger.

Bharti was injured when a host of party workers climbed up the dais, making it collapse under their weight late Thursday evening in Bareilly town of Raisen district. Bharti delivered her speech later by standing on a chair at the venue.

"We may have to take her for a CT Scan as she has received an injury to her head," her nephew Siddharta told IANS.

Describing the incident as a conspiracy of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Madhya Pradesh to kill her, Bharti told the media: "My life is constantly in danger".

"Earlier too a similar attempt was made in February this year at Satna when the security guard closed the door of the vehicle at Satna while I was about to sit in the car," she alleged.

Bharti was then injured when her head hit against the the window pane of the car in which she was travelling.

"The administration should have checked the dais as is the practice when some VIP is to visit. Although 'Z' category security has been provided to Bharti, the venue was not checked from the security point of view. This shows that the police and the district authorities have been directed from the top not to pay any heed towards her security," said her party general secretary Narendra Birthare.

BJP spokesman Uma Shankar Gupta, however, denied the charge saying, "The BJP does not believe in any such design and gimmicks. We wish Uma Bharti a long life so that she continues to serve the nation as she is doing today."
