Congress promises free power, Rs.2 a kg rice
Saturday, August 23, 2008 13:41 [IST]

Raipur: Chhattisgarh's main opposition Congress party said Saturday it would provide rice at Rs.2 a kg and free electricity to poor families if the party is voted to power in the November assembly polls.

"We will formally announce through the election manifesto that the party will provide rice at Rs.2 per kg and free electricity to below poverty line (BPL) families if voted to power," Ramesh Varlyani, state Congress general secretary, told IANS.

Sources in the Congress said that the move comes following the success of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government's scheme of providing rice at Rs.3 per kg for 3.5 million families.

Presently in the 90-member assembly, the BJP has 52 legislators while the Congress has 34 and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) have one each. Two seats are vacant.
