Cong dividing Sikhs in Haryana : Punjab minister
Saturday, August 23, 2008 17:24 [IST]

Yamunanagar (Har): A Punjab minister today said formation of a separate Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee to manage the affairs of Sikh shrines in Haryana was "not permissible". The proposal is against the SGPC constitution.

"The SGPC constitution, enacted in 1925, does not provide for the formation of any other similar body. The demand of Sikhs in Haryana is not permissible," Punjab Jail, Tourism and Stationary Minister Hira Singh told reporters here.

He alleged that Congress in Haryana was "actively" working to set it up as it wanted to "divide" Sikhs.

Earlier, activists of Haryana State Sikh Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (HSSGPC) showed black flags to the minister as a mark of protest against the neighbouring state's opposition to the formation of an apex body of gurdwaras here.

HSSGPC Vice-President Joga Singh had yesterday said Sikhs here were independent to form a separate GPC for the development of the community.
