Powerloom strike continues as talks fail
Saturday, August 23, 2008 20:47 [IST]

Coimbatore:With the tripartite talks failing to make any headway, the strike by over 1.5 lakh powerloom units in the region, entered the eight day today, rendering an estimated production loss of rs.300 crore.

Though Tamil Nadu Rural Industries Minister, Pongalur Palanisamy and District Collector, V Palanikumar held talks with the representative powerloom job workers and the textile manufacturers last night, it bore no fruit, resulting in the continuation of the strike, industry sources said.

Meanwhile, an NGO has opened a Centre in Krishnapuram near Karumathampatti to supply gruel to the families of striking workers, police said.

ATP, trade union wing of AIADMK and another NGO had supplied gruel to the workers yesterday.

Spinning sector in the region was also likely to be affected due to the strike, following non-lifting of yarn and some mills were likely to stop operations temporarily in a day or two, the sources said.
