Left to speak from Jamaat-e-Islami platform
Saturday, August 23, 2008 22:33 [IST]
New Delhi:The Left parties will now use a Muslim platform to attack "US imperialism" and the strategic bonds developed between India and US.

The leaders will speak at a conference titled Samrajwad Virodhi Muhim (Conference on Anti-Imperialism), organised by the Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JeI-H) along with 14 other social and civil society organisations, will discuss several pet topics of the Left including US imperialism, the Indo-US nuclear deal and government s economic reforms.

Left leaders are of the opinion that though the JeI-H is a religious organisation, they can participate in the conference "as there is a need to understand the Muslims".

Confirming the participation of Left leaders, JeI-H spokesperson and convenor for the conference S Q R Ilyas said, "we have invited several political parties including the Left parties, as they are clearly against the government s imperialistic deals.

"Our invitation also went to H D Deve Gowda of JD(S), Shahid Siddique (BSP) along with other academicians and intellectuals. So far the Left parties have confirmed participation of Mohd Salim and Subashini Ali from CPI(M), CPI s Atul Anjaan and RSP s Abani Roy while Forward Bloc is yet to confirm whether its leader G Deverajan would participate."

When asked about his participation at the JeI-H conference, CPI s national secretary Atul Anjaan said he is attending it as there is "a need to understand the Jamaat".

"They are against imperialistic policies of the government. So far the JeI-H members would approach us on many occasions to take our views, but this is the first time we will attend their conference and listen to them," Anjaan said.
