New Delhi:The Centre today asked the Uttar Pradesh to recommend a CBI probe into the Sunday s explosion in Kanpur in which Bajrang Dal s involvement is suspected.
Releasing a letter written to UP Chief Minister Mayawati suggesting that she recommend the incident to the Centre for a CBI probe, Minister of State for Home Sriprakash Jaiswal told reporters that only an agency like CBI could investigate such an incident having inter-state ramifications.
Asked whether Bajrang Dal should be banned, he evaded a direct reply saying the Centre could act only on the recommendation from the state government.
Two persons suspected to be Bajrang Dal activists were blown into pieces in the explosion carried out with the help of Ammonium nitrate on Janmasthami day on Sunday. High intensity explosives were also recovered from the site.
To a question on the situation in Kandhamal district in the wake of violence following the killing of VHP leader, he said the state government was investigating the incident to nab the culprits. "The incident is unfortunate", he said.
On the situation in Jammu and Kashmir, he dismissed a suggestion that matters have gone beyond control of the security establishment.
To a volley of questions raised in various quarters on the efficiency of his Ministry, his refrain was that the Home Ministry was doing its job and there was no intelligence failure.
On the delay in hanging Afzal Guru, the main accussed in the Parliament attack case, Jaiswal gave a weird explanation that the condemned prisoner was facing a "bigger punishment" with death continuously staring at his face. Source : PTI
