Two persons killed in police firing in Orissa

Bhubaneswar:At least two persons were killed and two injured when police opened fire today to disperse a mob attacked places of worships, prayer halls, houses and shops at Barakhama in Orissa s Kandhamal district rocked by violence in the wake of the killing of a VHP leader.

The police action came in the face of the mob violence, Director General of Police Gopal Chandra Nanda said.

The police was keeping a close watch on the situation in Kandhamal which witnessed widespread violence for the last three days in protest against the killing of VHP leader Laxmanananda Saraswati, he said.

Barakhama, considered communally sensitive, had witnessed largesale violence during the riots that rocked the district in December, 2007.
