Thursday, August 28, 2008 14:17 [IST]

New Delhi: A Dalit delegation from Nepal is in the country to study about the reservation system here and finetune their strategy before putting up their demands before the Government there.

The 20-member team led by Padam Sundar met CPI(M) Polit Buro member K Varadarajan here today and discussed the issues related to reservation system in the country.

"It was a fruitful discussion. We came here to learn from the Indian experience. We got an insight into the quota system in this country," Sundar told reporters after the hour-long meeting at the CPI(M) headquarters.

Noting that the Nepal Government led by Maoist chief Prachanda is sympathetic to their cause, he said the Dalit movement in the Himalayan country was "confident" that the dispensation will provide them reservation.

"If they don t, we will revolt. But we are confident that the Maoist government will accede to our demands. After all, majority of the Maoists are from the Dalit communities," he said.

Varadarajan said he and the delegation exchanged views about the situation of Dalits in both the countries.

The delegation has already met Planning Commission members Abhijit Sen and Syeeda Hameed, HRD Ministry Advisor P N Krishnan.
